In Antwerp Plug & Play is running a maritime platform since 2021. Plug & Play Maritime brings international start-ups into contact with the City of Antwerp, CMB, DXC Technology, Euronav and Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The target? Testing new technologies and driving the future of the maritime sector through world-class development and innovation.

A top focus for Port of Antwerp-Bruges is digitalization. POAB opens the port as an innovation platform for new technologies and works together with public and private players on the port of the future.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is fully testing a 'digital twin' of the port with real-time data to guarantee safe traffic, find possible violations and make simulations to make better investment decisions. The Advanced Port Information & Control Assistant (APICA) is the brain of the digital management application. A 3D interface with real-time information is the face.

In operations Internet of Things solutions are key. Thanks to the use of various sensors, the port can be monitored remotely and operate smarter.

In the use of drones the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is a frontrunner.

The newest evolution are autonomous ships.

Smart port solutions are not developed within the boundaries of the port. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is – together with the City and the University of Antwerp – one of the six founding partners of the 9 stores high innovation hub The Beacon, which is specialised in Internet of Things and Artificial intelligence solutions for port, industry and mobility. The Beacon is an ecosystem of +100 specialised startups, scaleups, corporates and knowledge institutions and owes its strength in the first place to cooperation between all its members and collaborate on innovative and sustainable solutions.

The port of the future is a digital port, but as well a sustainable port. Mainly this is about energy transition which we tackled already in our first priority: beat climate change. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is a frontrunner and forges several partnerships with private port companies. It won the award “The Sustainable Port” at the World Maritime Forum in Copenhagen 2022.
