Passion for fashion
Age: 40 years
Born in: Damascus, Syria
Belal Wali
"My father is a fashion designer. As a little boy, I used to help out in his factory. We made coats for small boutiques. In the evenings, he'd watch Fashion TV and I'd watch with him. That left an impression. That's how I grew into the business myself and became a designer.
In 2014, I moved to Belgium and started looking for work. Three years later, I started at Binnenste Buiten as part of a work experience programme. I took on significant responsibilities within the sewing studio. That place had a big impact on my personal growth and integration.
What's more, it's where I rediscovered my passion for fashion, which had faded into the background since 2012. The lessons from my colleague Odette were also very valuable. She taught me pattern drawing, for which I'm forever grateful.”
Creative combining
"In Belgium, I worked for several years as a freelance designer and tailor, including for Tomorrowland. For two years now, I have had my own label, Levantine. I now decide my own style, concept and collection. I focus on young, sustainable and environmentally conscious. I also supervise two fashion students as interns.
When I'm not working, I enjoy swimming or going to the gym. I also cook often: Mediterranean and Western. I like to combine ingredients creatively. Pretty much just like in my designs. By doing what I love, I take good care of myself.
Creativity is my strongest attribute. I like my appearance mostly because of my overall look. But a photo shoot? I had never done that before. It was a lovely experience."
