A group of residents from the New South neighbourhood in Antwerp accepted the challenge to live a circular life.
For three and a half years, they lived a circular lifestyle. They used less energy and water,
reused materials and accumulated and disposed of less household refuse (further we will use the term ‘waste’).
They were helped in their endeavours by experts and technology, but most of all, assistance came from each other.

Antwerp takes further steps towards becoming a circular city.
With communal gardens, solar panels, repair workshops and a number of energy and waste-reduction challenges in the Circular South app, the residents of New South made
the most of everything.

Welcome to New South
On the banks of the Scheldt river,
the City of Antwerp, its partners and residents built the neighbourhood of
the future, naming it ‘Nieuw Zuid
(New South).

Ready for a broader introduction
of circularity.
Circuit, the solar installations,
the neighbourhood energy group: with Circular South, we have taken important steps to further
roll out circularity.

From the first development in 2012 to the opening of the circular experience centre,
these are the milestones in
the Circular South project.

Circular South in action
The residents of New South aimed to use 10% less water and energy, to accumulate and dispose of 25% less non-reusable waste and household waste, and to unite in a community centre and energy cooperative. Wondering whether they succeeded
in achieving these goals?

Who was who in this project?

What can we learn
from Circular South?

In a group situation, the feeling of belonging is a very strong incentive for behavioural change. However, there needs to be more: legislation, ready-to-use products, good examples and communication tailored to every target group.
